well, if you've been marginalized your entire life, I imagine that has an effect.

and I don't think you can discount historical influence quite so easily. if it's happening to you, and you're sitting there thinking "it was the same for my parents, and their parents, and their parents..." and so on, I imagine that has a bit more of an effect.

and if the people involved in the awards still find value in it, what harm does it cause?
