This is likely the correct answer, but I'd like to hear from the parents. I suspect there are more factors at play.

Color me biased from having non-shitty parents, but I'd like to give them a little benefit of the doubt that there's more than age that's provoking their outrage.
But will concede that based on the info given, yeah, 'trust your own feelings and don't let the folks make your life decisions.'
