If he is the high bid, he is the highest, if someone was auto-bidding him up , it would say he was outbid by their continued bids -- nm

there is also one click bidding which in the last few minutes of the auction opens a java script window and lets you click and increase bid instantly

i haven't done it in a while but my recollection is i can always set my bid to go higher than the last highest bid (up to my own maximum) -- nm

Did you get a message saying you were the high bidder, and then got outbid, or did it just say you had been outbid when you submit yours?
