I suspect what people are doing in giving Cochran credit he doesn't deserve this season is simple. What was memorable about him last time is that the other tribe members recognized he was worthless and (regrettably) told him where he stood. This combined with his burning desire to do something memorable on a show he loved but didn't understand at all led to his treachery.
This season, he is on an island of misfit toys. It is much more difficult for him to stand out as broken with people like Philip and Lil Hantz around.
You are saying he is holding back when talking to his teammates. We don't even know that. It's simply not being shown in the editing.
He seems like exactly the same guy this season. The only difference is that the curve was lowered with the inclusion of even more loathsome characters. So he doesn't stand out as much.
