the idea about pole positioning and seats is very interesting.

I see it every morning...rushing to get to either end of the car. If you're lucky you get a seat that the very end which obviously means only one other person next to you. Those are the best seats. The next best are seats with poles next to them which create natural barriers, people are less likely to invade your space with a big metal pole between you.
The least ideal seats are in the middle of the cars with fewer poles and thus more chances to get squished next to some fat smelly dude.
The bit about high speed and not wanting to sit in any position other than the the direction of the train makes sense as the faster the train goes and breaks the more you get jostled. Sitting perpendicular to that absolutely sucks.
