We stayed at Hotel Union Square at the far end of one of the trolley lines

it was a nice old-style hotel that was convenient to hitting on a trolley, but the sound was a bit louder...

for just a couple of days, not unless you plan to leave the city (I always recommend going to Muir Woods - hi Reagen - but that takes a fewish hours).

Taxi in, take the trolley down to the wharf, walk the piers, maybe alcatraz....it's not $$$ -- nm

not really. Union square is a walking area, and the trollys take you straight to the wharf, which is also a big walking/shopping area -- nm

I've stayed in that area a couple of times - it's a good mix of affordable (for SF) and access to transit/stuff to see. -- nm
