If anyone is looking for gifts for 9-10 year olds (especially girls) I can't suggest the Warriors books enough.

My kid is tearing through these books. 300 page books disappear in about two days. Several of her friends have started to read them as well.
They are a fantasy type story and there are seemingly hundreds of these books (they seem like a kitten Dragonlance).
