Thinking about a new laptop and I'd appreciate some input. Guidelines and thoughts inside . . .

I basically would use the laptop for travel and light work (email, Word, internet surfing). For heavy work at home I'll pretty much always use the desktop. I have an early generation ipad that is beginning to wear down a bit (it's kind of slow and battery life seems to be shrinking), so I was thinking about getting one of the touchscreen Windows 8 machines to eventually substitute for the ipad. I know people seem to hate Windows 8, though I haven't exactly followed why. I thought some had to do with its optimization for touchscreen and most machines not being equipped for that (so it would deal with that), but there might be more.

Ideally I'd like to spend under $750. I've seen I5 machines with touch like this one http://www.amazon.com/VivoBook-S400CA-DH51T-14-Inch-Touch-Ultrabook/dp/B009F1JL5A/ref=amtcd_B00ATANVLG_B009F1JL5A for about $650, but it doesn't go into tablet mode (how important do we think that is?)

There's also this Lenovo http://www.amazon.com/Lenovo-Thinkpad-12-5-Inch-Touchscreen-Ultrabook/dp/B00AI86EC2/ref=amtcd_B009MPBFNU_B00AI86EC2
It does go into tablet mode, but is only an I3 chip (for my usage does that matter much? It does have a solid state drive as well that should add speed). For another $175 I can get the I5 chip. Thoughts on all of this? Any other recommendations? Much appreciated.
