I'm taking all of the wide releases from BOM from 1980 until now and classifying the type of film. I'm trying to draw correlations between the type of film and the BO take. I'm also trying to get a gauge of how the distribution of types have changes. Here are my classifications:
Remake - A remake of an existing film
Prequel - A movie added as part of a film franchise whose events happen before the events of an existing film
Sequel - A movie added as part of a film franchise whose events happen after the events of an existing film
Adaptation - A script based on an existing piece of work (comic, novel, short story, real life event)
Original - A script based on original work by the screenwriter
Re Release - Re release of a previously released film (with or without changes to the original, e.g. Jurassic Park 3D)
In the category Adaptation, I feel like this needs clarification. Adaptation of an obscure short story is NOT the same as adapting a comic book with a huge built-in fan base. It becomes subjective though. Someone suggested I create a subcategory, which will help with prequels and sequels as well. Sequels are sequels, but the original movie could have been an original, adaptation, remake, etc... Adaptations will be noted in the subcategory as to whether it had an existing fanbase or not.
TIA!! I'm just compiling the data now...
