At the :51 mark he's at full speed running and he's between the mound and first.

He was covering second and started to run to backup when he saw the throw was going home.
Responses:
the throw missed the first baseman by about 2 feet, tops.

He should have been there. He made a smart decision to backup when he saw where the throw was going.
