he's way more than a vocal assistant :) - he's jimmy iovine (see wikipedia link below). they've had him on more regularly since simon cowell left, to take the role of someone who actually is in leadership at a record label instead of just being a performer.
I don't always agree with him, but he's spot-on about the lack of contemporary songs and he does have a good feel for when people are off.
unfortunately, what he says doesn't seem to counter the power and influence of the show's producers, esp. the main one, nigel lythgoe. I gather he's responsible for all the old music instead of more contemporary content. all the time, I wonder why there's not more attention paid to what people actually buy these days and pay to see - so odd.
