I just think it's a bit simplistic to say "minorities, therefore no money". It's not really true in Canada. -- nm

to compare it to basketball, where one guy has to buy a 20 dollar ball, and you can play for months with it.

sure. but football isn't really cheap to play, either, and that hasn't stopped minority participation...nm

because schools supply the gear needed, unless you are playing in a pee-wee league -- nm

It's cheap to play with friends and get going. A football costs $20 and you can play two hand touch. Hockey sticks aren't cheap and they break.

i dunno. i don't disagree with the gist of smost of this argument, but i agree with R that it's awful simplistic....

I don't think it's just cost . The lack of role models is an issue. The lack of outreach is an issue. Where is the NHL when it comes to setting things

I think it's more realistic that minorities just don't like hockey as much as other sports. -- nm

more like a lot of minority parents don't appreciate the sport and don't see the value in spending that much on it. -- nm

sure it is, you can play tackle football without a ton of gear.

Also, they build courts all over the place. You don't need more than one friend to play basketball. You can't play hockey with two guys.

hockey's not really a school sport in canada at all. there are way more high schools with football or soccer teams than hockey. -- nm

Yeah, I can't think of a single HS hockey team that I've seen here.

Even the schools that have teams...most are club teams, not so much sponsored by the school. -- nm

There's that too. One school had hockey when I was in H.S. They had to travel really far to play games.

Hockey is definitely one of the more expensive sports to simply start playing. Skates alone (new) are most likely $100+. -- nm

Don't get me wrong, it's still an expensive sport. Just one of the circles on the Venn diagram has shifted some. -- nm
