Also, they build courts all over the place. You don't need more than one friend to play basketball. You can't play hockey with two guys.

There's similar problems in baseball. Fields are large and aren't easy to build in low income areas. You need a lot of friends to get a game together.
With basketball, the courts don't take up much room. You can play with one a couple of guys. The equipment is cheap and durable.
Football is similar since you don't need a legit field to play with your friends. Tackle require expensive equipment but you can learn to love the game without playing tackle.
