if you drive your car to a bar, you know you need to be able to drive home safely.

if you are a female, at a party, and you drink too much, you can't know in advance that you are going to be forced/convinced/whatever into being put in a position where you need to make a choice in advance. it is not a given that you will need to make that choice later.
