In response to "Yes and no. Since the NRA opposes comprehensive background checks, their arguments for "identifying the crazy people" is mostly misdirection since " by pmb

I feel their objections to this last failed legislation were more on slippery-slope grounds.


Seems like a lot of the debate went like this:


Pro-Gun: You want to take guns away.

Anti-Gun: No no! We just want background checks.

PG: You know those wouldn't have stopped Sandy Hook or Gabby's shooting, right?

AG: No, but this is just a first step.

PG: Toward what?

AG: Uh... you know... safety.



That aside, I could probably be talked into more background checks, but I (and others) are more in favor of identifying the unstable long before they get to the gun store.

How to do THAT without setting up thought police or creating potential for abuse of power, is the conversation we should be having.
