I can't recall - did reddit try to identify before those photos came out, aside from the brown student linking from his hs gf?

in any case, that part of the paragraph isn't as significant as that authorities had Lord & Taylor footage that was even more useful than random photos. that's the frequent pro trick - putting public and non-public info. together; and random commenters will never have that edge.
re: max's comment below - from when I looked at reddit on/off for hours last thursday night (I had spent maybe 5 minutes there ever before then), I do remember seeing a number of people suggesting that actual ID'ing wasn't a good idea. I think some irrationality took over for some others when they thought they might be scooping.
I saw someone say that they ruined people's lives. that's going way too far. they did hurt, but ruin? no.
