re: Don's 'pretending to enjoy the kids before finally one day it hits you and your heart explodes' monologue...
Of all the fatherhood books and essays and whatnot that I read before Lil' Vermin was born, the advice that really stuck with me was the revelation that fathers don't always feel the emotional click for awhile after birth. I also just stumbled across this quote from Hemingway where he said
"To be a successful father... there's one absolute rule: when you have a kid, don't look at it for the first two years."
...which is sort of in the same vein.
Now, I was certainly fascinated by, and felt very protective for Lil' Vermin upon her first breath, but I will say that I didn't really *feel* that connection for many months. But then I did, and became the center of my universe, and it strengthens every day.
I (and most fathers, I suspect) wasn't nearly as disconnected as Don was, or for nearly as long, but I think that process is not at all uncommon and really good for soon-to-be fathers to hear about.
