i only heard it in one of David Milch's lectures. basically the kid was a drunk and Melville landed him a cushy job at the customs house

but the kid was so drunk the morning he was supposed to start the job that he overslept and Melville, to teach him a lesson, didn't wake him up.
so his kid killed himself.
