yes, society was changing because of cars and electricity, telegraph but for the most part it wasn't an overnight thing. cars took 20 years or more to be common, 40 years till they dominated human transportation. electricity transformed downtowns but again it was a good 30-40 years before rural areas got wired.
telephones? even into the 50's for the poor working class they were not ubiquitous. even families in the neighborhoods had 'party lines' whereas today the tea baggers love to snear at food stamp shoppers using their iphones.
computers took over quickly, look at a quaint old movie like all the president's men, no word processors just typewriters on the desks, how long ago was that? oh yeah 70's dirty harry was in the 80's and no computers on those desks either.
20 years ago the cell phone was introduced and today they took over land lines, 5 years ago smart phones were introduced and today most folks in a bar are looking at their phones instead of the sports on the TV we have in our hands the power to look up any fact or reach any person on the planet (and use it to look at pictures of cats and argue with strangers)
