The original 13th tribe that went to earth weren't "centurions", they were like the final 5. The humans of Kobol created the organic cylons and the process of resurrection. Upon reaching earth the cylons were able to procreate without resurrection and forgot the process of resurrection. The final 5 rediscovered the process of resurrection and thus were the only cylons to survive the nuking. There was no explanation of why earth was nuked.

The centurions were created in the period between when the original cylons left for earth and when they returned.
