Did you forget the letter sent to George Bush in May 2001, signed by dozens economists, including several Nobel laureates, in opposition to OECD?

Basically it covered the global economy and warned that we were in for a big fall if we adopted the tenents of OECD and how it would do nothing more than promote an underground economy and hinder the development of 2nd and 3rd status countries' economy? The letter was a huge deal at the time, but funnily enough they didn't feel the need to take out a huge ad in the NYT to incite fear.
