can someone explain something to me ... the ending of the original Planet of the Apes ... when Heston says ...

you finally did it .... you blew it up ...
was he talking about realizing that someone back in the 20th century finally went and started a nuclear war, thus bringing about the end (basically) of Man and allowing for the rise of the apes ....
and how ironic is it, then, that in the 2nd movie there was a pocket of intelligent humans (how convenient) who have a doomsday device that will once and for all destroy the planet, escaping from which are the 2 chimps that go back in time in the 3rd film only to set into motion an alternate timeline where intelligent apes rise up and take over ....
i still love these old movies, but some of it just doesn't get it for me ...
