If you're going to give a kid a gun, even a toy, you should start teaching proper gun safety.

Treat every gun like it's loaded, never ever ever point it at someone unless you intend to kill them.
I have cousins that are country kids. They're very young, but know excellent gun safety (sadly, better than a lot of adults). I'd trust them holding a gun near me.
Education goes a long way. A 5 year old does not have the capacity to understand the damage a .22 will do and should not have a gun. He should have an airsoft and treated as though it is deadly.
