Was that earnest? At best, it was earnestly not apologizing for the right thing.

There is a difference between saying "hey, I'm sorry that I mocked and said I didn't care that there were women close to you, your wife and sister perhaps, that were deeply affected by rape," and saying, "hey, that stuff I said? it's not that I didn't necessarily mean it or think it's true, but I should have been smart enough not to say it out loud to you."
