In 8th grade my friends and I called multiple chem companies with the story we needed raw materials for making crystals in science class.

It was obvious enough that we were trying to make explosives (for destroying action figures, which in hindsight was just as dumb) that nobody would provide us with what we wanted.
My brother was recently on a diving trip to Roatan and ran into a guy running his self-built submarine for tourists to see the fish etc. It turns out this guy went to our high school in the years between we graduated, and is semi-famous. In the early 90s, we had a year where it was rumored the town wasn't going to launch fireworks on the 4th of July due to budgets, so he fashioned his own, climbed up on the police department building (right next to the field where they normally launch), and fired them off one night as a protest/prank. He was charged with detonating a bomb on town property.
