we have to pump the pool water down in the fall to expose the return fittings (think pipes underground running into pool wall) so we can get all the water out so pipes wont freeze and break.
Over a snowy winter and rainy fall, pool levels rise and water sifts through the mesh cover making it look like a small pool of clear drinkable water (to the deer)
This pool of water is in the center of the pool, so young deer think they can walk right to it, but get past the edge of the pool, break through the cover with their hooves, and start to panic
