I was just looking at an article, red clay of the area expands/contracts with moisture and frost, this causes typical basements to crack/leak....but

now they can seal them with the same stuff they use to seal swimming pools and truck bed linnings, that stuff is bombproof (literally say the mythbusters)
I mean the old way of just digging a hole and lining it with cinderblock is sure to fill with water fast, sure.
so there is no fucking good reason not to have them
that or build double cinderblock wall, 3 foot wide and fill with dirt. slope walls in some, steel frame doors, make them with a short hallway, man trap like. the center hall of a school could be built like this, or a room at the end.
