I had just opened it from the web, wasn't in the reader

Just have to be careful because the front pages (table of contents, etc.) sometimes count as 1 to X and sometimes as i, ii, iii, etc. -- nm

supposedly the whole thing is a print preview but I still never know whether to select "fit to page", "actual size", etc.

Yeah, I don't like the print dialog in Chrome for pdfs. I use IETab to get it so I can print, e-mail, etc... -- nm
