In response to "I think it was so over the top and ham-handed in the context of the rest of the movie, that it almost didn't deserve to be in the same vicinity as " by Will Hunting

I think it fit exactly with the theme of (spoilers)

how earth got to point that it was at. People became so obsessed with leisure, comfort, and goods that they lost track of everything else.

I've heard the film criticized as blatant environmental propaganda, but I found it to be much more about us as people than about the earth.
