I think it's just another one of the events the characters lived through
There are all sorts of historical events that take place throughout the movie, and the characters don't seem particularly affected by any of them. Their personal story is what they remember, not the events. Just like Julia Ormond won't remember Katrina, she'll remember the day her mother died and the day she found out about her father
