The French Market used to be an amazing conglomeration of local artists and tradesmen selling their wares, if you will. There was a ton of culture on display and they really had a ton of really cool stuff.
I was there less than a year after Katrina and the French Market was almost empty. So many people had to get out that there business just went away. The Market is back to major business now, but so many of those quirky or artistic tables have been replaced by yet another vendor selling overpriced beads and t-shirts that say things like "I got bourbon faced on Shit Street".
And Bourbon itself used to be a carnival of different music and sounds as every other club was a jazz or blues club featuring live music. Post Katrina, a ton of places closed down...those that stayed open actually had to share staff to remain open and eventually lost too much to stay open and it seems like every good blues club that closed was replaced by a shitty strip club. There used to be like 4 maybe 5 strip clubs on Bourbon proper...there's at least 20 now.
Maybe I've just gotten old too...I've been going there for 20+ years now and I could just be old. But remembering to trips of the past...this one didn't even come close to comparing.
The food, however, still remains INCREDIBLE!
