As far as I understand it, you can't request one method over the other.

They seem to vary things...sometimes both are in use, sometimes only one of the two types is in use. If both are in use I usually try and see which line is being directed towards the metal detector and ease my way into that line. Sometimes it works. Sometimes I get told to get in a specific line.
I always look for Juan.
