They're not regulate like other devices because their purpose is security, not medical so they're able to skirt by with different regulations.
Most of the science that I read is flimsy, some people say you get 10times the radiation. The Europeans don't use them although the Brits tried last year I believe...not sure of the outcome on that.
Chertoff is now a consultant for the maker of these devices.
In this current security climate if there wasn't something to the science suggesting the danger do you think they'd quietly be defunded and pulled like they are?
