At first it felt like the script was ripped out half-way through and replaced with a different script. But then the scene where Jennifer Lawrence faces off with Robert DeNiro made me realize that the whole first half of the movie was a put-on. It's intentionally dark and dreary in order to set up this ending which plays like some kind of 80s teen comedy. C'mon, there's even a freaking training montage! The movie is too clever by half. The movie actually gets a better grade because I know I'm being put on by David O. Russell.
