No, it's a practice that's pretty much how TV is here. You have a primary character and they stay on the show for years.

The reason I bring up the cable shows are becuase their seasons of 13-16 episodes are they are shorter in nature but aren't padded with the filler that is network 22 episode seasons.

But the main players stay the main players here for years. They don't just up and leave (rare is the case) and we call that normal.

Smith and Tennant have between them 80 or 90 episodes. Even on USA, that's Burn Notice or White Collar; and we're not just flipping Matt Bomar or Jeffrey Donovan out as a matter of due course.
