OAK RIDGE - Oak Ridge National Laboratory's nanoscience research facility was evacuated this afternoon after a chemical sensor went off in a "clean room."
Department of Energy spokesman John Shewairy said employees in the Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences were relocated to the nearby office quarters of the Spallation Neutron Source, where employees are "sheltered in place" until the situation is fully evaluated. He said he did not know the number of people evacuated.
Shewairy said there was some maintenance activity taking place in the clean room, and the alarm which went off about 12:45 p.m. may have been related to a cleaning solution.
He said a hazardous materials team is investigation the center at the CNMS, a $65 million research facility that was opened a couple of years ago to engineer new materials and study their characteristics.
More details as they develop online and in Wednesday's News Sentinel.
