Law or no law. He should have been treated like a pariah. They saw that needed vote, and folded like a cheap lawn chair.

Tainted goods, coming back to haunt them.

If my roommate steals from me and I kick him out of my house. I am not going to let someone he recommends move in to replace him. No matter how honest I might THINK that guy is.
