Is anyone here familiar with policy debate?

My wife is totally flipping out that her logic class has turned into a debate class per the instructions of the principal.

She's never been in a debate or taught one, and is trying to learn through google searches. If anyone here can at least give her the basics, I think it would calm her down significantly.
