"Dumb question - is there some sort of rule of thumb regarding how long it takes to get through to a radio station when they are giving something away?"

1 minute is about the useful limit. I've managed to win a few contests and I used to work in the industry, here's the skinny.

When they're talking about it, get the number dialed into your phone. *The moment* they stop talking and start the commercial or song, hit dial. This is your absolute best chance to get through, as they will have 'un-busied'(anywhere from 4-8 lines will immediately become open, where previously they were all ringing busy) the lines as soon as they go to commercial/song. If you get through, but are not the right caller, try again immediately, but generally, you're most likely screwed at that point. Getting through just as the lines get un-busied is the most likely. Remlik can maybe confirm or deny, but that's how it worked when I worked on the radio industry.
