ST poll time, anyone? from an academic standpoint, is it possible to plagarize yourself? ....
|
as in ... you do a research paper in your undergrad work, and later "recycle" the paper either in another related undergrad class, or your repurpose it and expand on it for a grad level class ...
yes, it's likely academic laziness for sure ... but is it some form of (self-)plagarism? is it otherwise some form of academic dishonesty?
Personally, i think that if a person takes something they did, say in an undergrad class, and then they do some more research later and expands on the original paper for a grad class, that it's not so much academic dishonesty or (self-)plagarism as it's merely continuing one's own work ...
of course, I've been known to be wrong a time or two ...
anyway, I am just curiious about this ... I've been doing some reading on some subjects that I did a paper on a year and a half ago, and I've found some good source material that I wish I'd had back then. I might eventually, redo my old research paper ... and yes, the thought did cross my mind to repurpose the paper at some point in the next 2 years while in Grad school ...

that doesn't sound like plagiariism at all. -- nm

I can't see that's different from an updated version of a published work - and we see those all the time.

you might want to write a citation within the new paper that points to the old one. Let the instructor research how similar they are if he/she wants -- nm

just make sure the instructor is aware and read your school's plagiarism policy closely.

it's possible to plagiarize yourself, sure. to what extent you build on it matters, though. also the school's honor code or policy w/r/t this...nm

It's definitely not plagarism. I have a hard time believing there's anything wrong with it at all. -- nm

I wouldn't think so - you're using your own skills and knowledge after all (rather than someone else's) -- nm

I did it several times. *Every* time got a better grade on it in college than I did in HS. -- nm
