1533, Paul III (played by Peter O'Toole, who is fantastic in the part) is already pope (I think he was elevated in 1535 or 36, after Henry VIII had already broken with Rome). An assassin is hired by the Spanish ambassador to assassinate Anne Boelyn, fails and escapes to Rome where the Pope convinces him to become a "Jesuit".
It would have been referred to as the "Society of Jesus" then, if it had existed. It wasn't formally recognized by the church until 1540.
