volunteer tomatoes from store bought scraps or hybrid plants tend to be weird because the seeds revert to one of the parent stocks

store bought tomatoes are specifically breed for hothouse, even hydroponic growth and when grown naturally tend to have bland taste, mushy fruit that splits, heck practically explode spontaneously just before ripening. (store tomatoes are picked green just when the 'star' forms on the bottom and gassed before distribution to pink them up)
