Advertising budgets are always hazier to me than even the production budget because you never know who paid for what with marketing partnerships.

For example, those "How does the Man of Steel shave?" Gillette promotions. Does that count in the advertising budget? Did Warner Brothers pay for any of that or did Gillette pay Warner Brothers to use Superman? I get that Warner Brothers was looking for something in the $800M worldwide ballpark, if not a billion, and they're not going to get close, but I think it's at least hovering around break even territory when all is said and done (particularly when you consider the merchandising) so I have a hard time calling it a bomb. World War Z is looking like a loss (again unless foreign really takes off) but it's getting praised for not being as big a loss, I guess, which seems odd.
I haven't seen either movie, so I have no opinion on the quality. I guess WWZ did a better job of managing expectations and therefore controlling perceptions.
