after not finding anything with that name or The Teacher, I actually went through all the pages of the poster list but couldn't find him - it's possible he used a different username than TT or that I just missed (searching is super slow and I was poorly multitasking, trying to get a project out).
iirc, he posted here while I was absent at some point but someone later mentioned he'd come back. I remember I was bummed I'd missed him.
anyway, the facebook page I mentioned has entries for past years, if you deal with their (annoying to navigate) timeline. it looks like he was getting ready for a bone marrow transplant, had infections before or after, and that's likely what brought the end.
I also saw that he and his wife (who is now engaged to someone else - and has a photo showing her with a fiance and a small child, so it looks like she's nicely moved along) were registered with a june wedding scheduled (he joked about gifts). they must have made it happen sooner.

I've been working to not be very upset about this because I'm at work and because we lost touch years ago, but it's hard. you learn a lot about someone when you (even virtually) spend so many hours with them as they're going through something so life-impactful, and a lot of personal things came up. maybe that's why he didn't stay in touch, I don't know. (I had almost the exact same thing happen with another online friend some years before, maybe it's a thing.)
