This is truer to the character. Barring being sent to war (and Downtown isn't due for one of those for quite some time again) there is no reason for Matthew to abandon his wife. It wouldn't be true to the character. So either

A) A calamity like a coma must or stranded on a desert island must occur (which are smart in case he wants to come back but both are getting a bit too Days of Our Lives after the paralysis storyline)
or
B) kill him

As a producer of the show, I'd go with A) to hedge my bets of return. But I can't blame them for killing him. If you want to me mad, I think that should be directed at the actor.
