there have been a lot of stories about underencrypted and protected laptops - hospitals, schools, gov't orgs, companies.

password protection isn't enough.
my company is increasingly tough about this; and, while it's annoying, I understand why.
and the above? isn't even for personal computers, which are likely even more insecure. we have to jump through hoops and have security software installed, even on personal phones and tablets, if we want to access mail on them; and, if we log-in from a personal computer just for mail (which is almost all we can access from one of them), we have to electronically swear we have the required standard of encryption, or else there's only a light version (usually fine).
