NYC cost of living question

How comfortably can one live in NYC on $50,000 (job would be in the Columbia University area)? That sounds like a lot of money to me, but not sure how it would apply to living in NYC.

If you don't live in Manhattan it's very doable. If you want to live in the city then it'll be tough.
