So sad. Our local news just ran a crawl under the show we're watching--the 19th firefighter has now died.

For the most part, summer firefighters here in the west are college students and mexicans with green cards. They live either in little cabins at ranger stations in the national forests or in tent compounds up in the mountains or in the desert. It's really hard work, but it pays well for a summer. I remember several years ago when a group of about 25 college students from Oregon were killed fighting a fire in either Washington or Idaho.

We had a pretty big wildfire spring up today between here and Twin Falls, it's still not under control. At least the prevailing winds are from the Southwest so it won't affect us, for now. We had our share of fires last summer.
