Yeah this is exactly what I'm doing. Receipts or scribble on index card if I swipe my debit card, then moving the actual cash around when I'm home.

It may feel for a bit like I'm being stupid...
Swipe my card to buy lunch for 11 bucks, keeping that receipt, then when I get home taking 11 bucks out of that envelope and moving it to the "deposit" zone.
But I think it'll keep me honest about where the fluid cash goes.
