Yup. We had people doing these things before reality TV, hip hop and mob movies.

Athletes are like everyone else and you're bound to find sociopaths among them as much as you would any large group. I'm sure there are kleptomaniacs and very altruistic people in sports as well. They're not special and if your sample size is that large you're going to find exactly what you find in the rest of society, good people, bad people and everything in between.
